Witchcraft and Second Sight in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland by Scottish folklorist and Church minister John Gregorson Campbell, was first published in 1902. A posthumous publication collected entirely from oral sources, this work explores Highland folk-lore, on subjects such as hobgoblins, witches, divination, black and white magic, spells, festivals of the Celts, the devil, etc. The author was known for meticulously transcribing the stories which were dictated to him by the individual storytellers, and whilst other Church ministers were often dismissive of what they considered to be tales based on superstition and paganism, Campbell insisted on adding such tales to his collections, concerned that this intolerance would result in the loss of valuable resources.
